Sound Appealing, But Be Careful!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em;\"><span color=\"#000000\" style=\"color: #000000;\">What exactly is a \u00abgizmo?\u00bb I define it as&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an unspecified object that you don\u2019t know the proper name for and have little confidence that the product will actually work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!--more--><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em;\">The trucking industry has seen its share of gizmos over the years . . . most often under the guise of huge fuel savings or major cost savings of some type. In a recent Fleet Owner magazine story, I reviewed some gizmos that have gone on to become indispensible and others that should remained identified as \u201cgizmos.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em;\">Questionable Gizmos<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\">Here\u2019s a few gizmos that I have seen through the years that either failed or their true value is still up for debate:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Rote Lube<\/strong> &#8212; A device installed on a driveline to continue to lube the u-joints to improve life and reduce failures. I was forced to use it and it was a huge failure; cost too much and the real issue was greasing procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Anti-spray brushes on the side of trailers<\/strong> &#8212; Many folks tried these in hopes that they would solve our splay and spray for passing vehicles; this did not last very long, that\u2019s what wipers are for. Although I understand they\u2019re mandatory in some northwest states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Centrifugal oil filters<\/strong> &#8212; Used in conjunction with everyday media filters, this was an additional filtration that may or may not have been needed. Seems we did quite well without them in the past \u2013 and currently. If it is standard on the current engines, OK, but retrofitting has no value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Washable engine oil filters<\/strong> &#8212; Who wants to wash out an oil filter? I think we like to unscrew them and screw on a new one. Now, I believe WIX Filters made a Detroit Diesel oil and fuel adapter to convert from sock filter to spin on gizmo, which was one that worked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>CNG LNG, Hydrogen<\/strong> &#8212; Add-on gizmos that improve fuel economy on retrofitting to an engine were more work, and efforts to save what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Brake drum coolers<\/strong> &#8212; Added to the hubs to cool off brake drums, why? To extend life. Immeasurable in my opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Fuel saving thingies<\/strong> (another name for \u201cgizmos\u201d) on the side of air fairing, trailers, hood of vehicles &#8212; Do they really work in the real world, or just in a wind tunnel?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Flaps with thousands of holes<\/strong> &#8212; Do they really work in the real world? The sales pitch rumor was up to 2 miles per gallon savings. Really?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Wheel covers<\/strong> &#8212; Gizmos around the tandems. Do they really work, and are they worth the expense and aggravation? Looks like a safety hazard to me. What happens when one falls off and hits a vehicle?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Nitrogen filled tires<\/strong> &#8212; Yes, tires will run a little cooler, but they also will with proper air pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em;\">Gizmos That Work<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Automatic slack adjusters<\/strong> &#8212; Started as a gizmo; now cannot live without them.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.doublecointires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/automatic20slack20adjuster.jpg\" alt=\"automatic slack adjuster.jpg\" width=\"250\" title=\"automatic slack adjuster.jpg\" caption=\"false\" data-constrained=\"true\" style=\"width: 250px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; float: right;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>On-off viscous fan drives and non-metal light weight fan blades<\/strong> &#8212; start-stop gizmos work great on reefers and off road equipment in cold country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Air shields<\/strong> &#8212; started as a gizmo and SOP today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.doublecointires.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/diesel20fuel20warmer.jpg\" alt=\"diesel fuel warmer.jpg\" width=\"150\" title=\"diesel fuel warmer.jpg\" caption=\"false\" data-constrained=\"true\" style=\"width: 150px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;\">Fuel heaters<\/strong> \u2013 intank and external; very useful. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PrHv0WLSyPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out this video on the Arctic Fox version<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Tire inflations systems on trailers<\/strong> &#8212; a gizmo that developed into a good factory option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Solar panels<\/strong> &#8212; now becoming factory options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\"><strong>Quick release glad hands for trailers<\/strong> \u2013 very popular and useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1em; color: #000000;\">Bottom line &#8212; Evaluate gizmos with a common sense approach. Maybe try a few, but if it is not an option at the factory or has little promise of becoming an option, then retrofitting gizmos almost never works out in the long term.
