This Violation sidelines one in Five Tractor Trailers……
If you’ve ever been through a CVSA road check inspection, you know how thorough they are. Inspectors don’t cut corners—and if your tires are not up to spec, your truck is getting parked.
According to the Fleet Owner April 2025 issue, 22% of all out-of-service (OOS) violations during last year’s CVSA road check were tire-related. That means more than one in five trucks taken off the road had tire problems.
Most of those tire issues are completely preventable. From worn tread to underinflation and sidewall damage, many fleets are sidelined by things that could have been caught during a walkaround inspection. Proactive tire maintenance is key to passing inspection and staying on the road.
Here are a few ways to stay ahead of the curve:
✅ Check Tread Depth Often
Use a tread gauge—don’t guess. Replace tires if you’re under 4/32” on steer tires or 2/32” on trailer tires.
✅ Keep Tire Pressure Dialed In
Use a calibrated gauge and check pressure when tires are cold. Underinflation is one of the leading causes of tire-related OOS violations.
✅ Inspect Sidewalls and Tread Surfaces
If you see cuts, bulges, or any exposed cords, it’s time to pull that tire.
✅ Rotate and Align When Needed
Uneven wear leads to faster replacements. Keep your alignment and rotation schedule consistent.
