Whether you’re navigating open yards, construction sites, or busy ports, your forklift fleet depends on the strength and performance of its tires. Pneumatic tires—especially those designed for outdoor use—play a crucial role in ensuring load stability, operator safety, and extending equipment life.
Like any critical part of your forklift, tires need to be inspected, maintained, and eventually replaced. Let’s explore the fundamentals of pneumatic forklift tires and how to optimize their performance in high-demand, outdoor applications.
Pneumatic tires are air-filled tires built to perform in environments where ground conditions are unpredictable, surfaces are uneven, and load weights can fluctuate. These tires are engineered with thick, rugged tread to provide traction, cushioning, and adaptability.
Unlike solid or press-on tires, pneumatic tires contain internal air pressure and require regular maintenance. They’re most often used on forklifts that operate outdoors or across mixed surfaces, including gravel, asphalt, or even dirt.
“Pneumatic tires are designed to absorb shock and adapt to rough surfaces, offering the flexibility and strength required in outdoor industrial operations.”
— Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
Tires don’t last forever, especially in tough environments. But knowing when to replace them can prevent costly downtime, equipment wear, and safety hazards.
Bald or Uneven Tread
Worn tread impacts traction and can increase the risk of sliding or tipping, especially when carrying loads on inclines or slick surfaces. If you see flat spots or the tread pattern is no longer visible, it’s time for a replacement.
Cracks, Cuts, or Tears
Outdoor applications often expose tires to nails, glass, metal debris, and temperature swings. Small cracks can grow quickly under load or heat. Deep cuts or visible casing mean the tire is no longer structurally sound.
Air Leaks or Pressure Loss
Slow leaks often indicate internal damage. A tire that requires frequent inflation may have a damaged valve, bead, or sidewall.
Chunking
Chunking—when pieces of tread rubber break off—is a sign of excessive heat or impact damage. This is common when tires are run underinflated or on debris-heavy surfaces.
Exposed Ply or Casing
If the internal structure of the tire becomes visible, the tire is beyond its service life and should be taken out of rotation immediately.
Proper maintenance and good operating habits can significantly extend the life of your pneumatic tires and improve fleet safety.
✅ Weekly Pressure Checks
Check tire pressure weekly—or more frequently in changing temperatures. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for PSI. Keep valve caps secure and inspect for leaks around beads and stems.
“Proper tire inflation is the single most important factor for maximizing performance and safety. Underinflation increases heat and wear, while overinflation can lead to tire failure under load.”
— Tire Industry Association (TIA)
✅ Inspect for Surface Damage
Look for embedded objects, cracking sidewalls, or uneven tread wear. Early identification can help you rotate or replace before damage becomes a hazard.
✅ Train Forklift Operators
Smooth turns, avoiding abrupt stops, and adhering to load limits all reduce stress on the tires. Operators should also steer clear of curbs and sharp debris when possible.
✅ Maintain Clean Work Areas
Unnecessary wear and puncture risks increase when the operating surface is littered with scrap, nails, or industrial debris. Routine site cleaning helps preserve tire integrity.
When it’s time to replace, make sure you match the tire’s specifications to your forklift’s application needs:
“Radial tire construction improves the footprint, delivers a smoother ride, and enhances durability, making it ideal for industrial applications where performance and comfort matter.”
— U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA)
If your fleet operates in high-stress, outdoor environments and relies on air-filled tires, the REM-6 by Double Coin is a rugged, proven choice. This all-steel radial pneumatic tire is engineered for durability and performance where it matters most.
Its steel casing helps maintain a flatter footprint, which improves both traction and wear profile, especially on uneven or debris-laden surfaces. In addition, the all-steel construction enhances puncture resistance, providing greater protection against sharp objects and impact damage in industrial environments.
With deep tread, heat-resistant rubber compounds, and a broad range of sizes built for forklifts, cranes, and yard trucks, the REM-6 is a reliable upgrade for any hard-working fleet.

VERY DURABLE, STRONG TIRE, GOOD TRACTION FOR ANY CONDITIONS. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS TIRE. PRICE IS OK, COULD FIND A CHEAPER TIRE BUT I DON’T THINK IT WOULD LAST OR WORK AS WELL AS THIS DOUBLE COIN. 2 THUMBS UP.
